Introduction:

The Thinking Skills and Abilities are mental processes and abilities that enable the individual to develop the ability to observe, analyse, reflect, synthesize, infer, compare and be creative. These abilities are focused on adaptation to their environment, problem solving and decision making.

Through this Challenge you will learn to create an intelligent and deliberative environment in your teaching practice through strategies, guided practices and training that are commonly known as Thinking Skills and Routines.

The thinking skills are mental processes and abilities that enable the individual to develop the ability to Observe, Analyse, Reflect,

Synthesize, Infer, Compare and be Creative. These abilities are focused on adaptation to their environment, problem solving and decision making.

There are three principles, set out at the end of the 1980s after several studies were done, that one must take into consideration when working on thinking skills and abilities in class:

  • The more explicit the teaching of thinking is, the more effective it is.
  • The greater the ambience of reflection in the class, the more students value the ability to think.
  • The more integrated the teaching of thinking is in the transfer of contents, the more students think about what they are learning.

Thinking Routines are brief and simple strategies that help students guide thinking and structure class debates. The aim of their use is to make them a habit so they become part of students’ way of thinking.

Thinking Skills comprise a deeper and more elaborate kind of thinking, so the use of graphic organisers is nearly always necessary to explain the thought and make it visible.
