Introduction:
Emotional Education is a term coined by Peter Salovey and John Mayer and widely used by the psychologist, philosopher and journalist Daniel Goleman, which can be briefly defined as the ability to feel, understand, control and modify one’s own and others’ moods.
More and more research shows that the development of emotional intelligence is a key factor in learning, student’s well-being, academic and, later on, professional success. Being aware of this, teachers are increasingly required to develop the emotional competencies of their students.
However, to do this, each teacher must be able to develop their own emotional intelligence and, in turn, receive the necessary training to deal with this demand. Therefore, this Challenge reviews theoretical bases and practical suggestions so each teacher can take the first steps in the difficult but important task of identifying and managing their own emotions and, subsequently, contributing to the emotional literacy of their students.
Learning to handle emotional intelligence as teachers, broadens our professional ability to be more effective and respectful with our students when applying to learning the abilities that teachers and students have to feel, understand, control and modify our moods, as well as applying the cognitive skills that, traditionally, we often take into consideration.
Through this challenge, you learn to work with emotional intelligence across the board, making the most of the activities and proposals relating to any specific curriculum content, to do learning activities that are clearly aimed at working on these kinds of emotional skills.
